Project title: Discovering key blade shape features for accelerated wake recovery to enhance Future Wind Energy Plants

Host Institution: Technical University of Munich (TUM)

Host Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Carlo L. Bottasso

Co-host Institution: Technical University of Denmark (DTU)

Co-host Supervisor: Sr. Researcher Frederik Zahle

Summary project: The project purpose is to present innovative design solutions within wind energy science to help our society meet tomorrow’s growing energy demand in a sustainable way. The developed designs aim to improve the flow immediately behind the wind turbine also knowns as a wake. This is achieved with a multidisciplinary approach combining experimental expertise from TUM with numerical expertise from DTU. The chosen numerical design approach is CFD-based shape optimization. The end result will be novel shapes for tips and full blades as well as an experimental quantification of how accurate the numerical model is.
