Summary project: The supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle is gaining momentum as the next-generation power conversion technology for renewable energy sources and other applications. In order to attain a high thermal efficiency, it is necessary to operate the main compressor of the power system close to the thermodynamic critical point. However, such operation is associated with steep property changes and the potential occurrence of two-phase flows. These phenomena may result in unstable operating conditions and decreased compressor performance. The aim of this project is to provide the scientific basis enabling the robust design of centrifugal compressors of supercritical carbon dioxide power systems operating close to the critical point.
