Summary project: Urban wastewater systems (UWS), as significant energy consumers, are providing an essential public service, and also have a huge energy recovery potential. Even though the energy recovery techniques within UWS are fast developing, there is still a lack of connection and communication between UWS and the power system, which is on the path of rapid energy transition. The energy integration of UWS with the power system aims at reducing the dependence of UWS on external power supply, optimizing the effectiveness of energy recovery from wastewater and tackling the sustainable challenge of energy transition. By applying Demand Response (DR), UWS could provide an end use energy solution in electricity, gas, heat, and water that can deliver flexibility, sustainability, security of supply and competitiveness. This DRUWS project realizes such integration by designing automated DR control strategies for benchmark plant-wide systems.
